When the rich man in Luke 18:18 asked Jesus what it takes to inherit eternal life Jesus responded by first telling him to know the commandments (when we know better we do better so in knowing the commandments and laws we should be living as if we truly know better) then followed up with "sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." Jesus gave him this command knowing it would be difficult for the man to leave all his wealth, money, and material possessions because he had faith, trust, and a sense of safety in his finances and material possessions.
This is timely for me because I've been struggling with leaving my possessions. However, rather than me holding onto material wealth and money I am holding onto things that are familar to me that's giving me some comfort which (to me) ain't 100% walking by faith and not by sight because my possessions are things that have memories from the past attatched to them that I'm holding onto tightly, for familiarity and comfort. (And change isn't comfortable and following Christ requires sacrifice, hence we must present ourselves a living sacrifice).
Luke 18:29-30 states "I (Jesus) assure you that everyone who has given up house, wife, brothers, parents, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God, will be repaid many times over in this life, and will have eternal life in the world to come."
In Mark 1 the men Jesus called to be disciples immediately, without delay, dropped what they were doing and followed Jesus! Wasn't no questions, comments, or concerns.
Matthew 16:24-25 reads "Jesus says 'If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.'"
Being a true follower (disciple) of Christ takes sacrifice (and faith). So what are you sacrificing? Your possessions? Your favorite platform to serve and glorify God? Your time?
